Sharon Clark (1944-2000) was an extraordinary Oshawa volunteer whose commitment to children in need spanned over five decades. In 1968, as an employee at Oshawa’s General Motors plant, she founded the “Sharon’s Kids” initiative to ensure that every child could experience a joyful Christmas, especially those served by the Durham Children’s Aid Society (DCAS).
From that humble beginning, the program blossomed: it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018 and, in the four years preceding 2022, raised more than half a million dollars to support families across Durham.
Clark’s legacy continues to resonate throughout the community. In recognition of her tireless dedication, the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation established the annual Sharon Clark Memorial Volunteer Award in 2022, honouring volunteers who embody her spirit of compassion—those who go the extra mile so that “No Child or Youth Shall Be Left Behind”.
In her memory, Oshawa Community members perpetuate her mission each Christmas by directing donations and proceeds—such as those from the sale of homemade preserves and maple products—to DCAS, ensuring Sharon’s caring mission continues to brighten children’s lives.
